REWIND

Otto drops me off and I rush up to my condo. During the car ride home, I keep silent. The vision swims in my brain and if I talk about them I might loose them.

I close the door behind me, drop my saddlebag on the floor in the hall, and climb up onto the chair at the drawing table. I open a fresh page from the pad, grab a pencil, close my eyes, and sketch. I try to capture as much of the room as I can, the kind of sheets and blankets on the bed, the calendar featuring a bikini clad bimbo, and the cracks on the wall. I finish five drawings and write down my notes on the vision. The fear I felt, the texture of the knife going across my neck, the chill consuming my body as the blood drained, and the squeaky sad whisper of the killer behind my back who pinned me to the floor.

My hand aching, I drop the pencil and turn to the clock on the wall. I’ve been working for five hours. My stomach rumbles. Dinner time. But instead, I pick up my cell phone and call Gray.

“Hey, it’s me,” I say into the phone. “Okay to see your son tonight?”
